It’s that time of year again. School children are preparing for Christmas concerts. Actually, that’s not technically true anymore in our public school. Over the past few years, the Christmas concert became a “holiday program” including guilt inducing lectures and then last year’s admittedly fun celebration of lots of different winter holidays.
I still wonder why we can’t just have a concert of non-religious Christmas songs. Doesn’t everyone love Rudolph?
This year’s concert sounds dreadful. Relatively short but dreadful. The theme is “My Town, My World”. Even the intros to the songs are painful like “Today we make a pledge to treat our town like the precious place it is and we make the same promise to our province, our country, our continent and our world!”
Seriously. Throw in a bit of we have so much and we need to share with everyone else in the world plus we have to take care of Earth and share with the animals. The last song is “This World is Ours”:
This world is ours, and everyone has to do their part.
This world is ours.
It holds a place deep within our hearts.
We care for it, we honor it. This land is ours.
The sea is ours. This world is ours. This world is ours.
Ugh. We “honor” the world? That sounds suspiciously like econut religion.
I want Christmas carols and fun, not a one hour lecture pushing an agenda.
